How this calculator works
Since 1997 the Social Security Administration has staggered retirement, survivor and disability payments across three Wednesdays each month, based on the birthday of the person whose work record the benefit is paid on. If you started receiving benefits before May 1997, or if you receive both Social Security and SSI, your Social Security is paid on the 3rd of the month and SSI on the 1st. When a date falls on a weekend or federal holiday, the payment moves to the business day before.
The dates come from the official SSA payment calendars for 2026 and 2027, with holiday shifts applied from the OPM federal holiday list.
Frequently asked questions
How does Social Security decide my payment date?
Second Wednesday for birthdays on the 1st–10th, Third Wednesday for the 11th–20th, and Fourth Wednesday for the 21st–31st. Social Security received before May 1997, or receiving both Social Security and SSI: Social Security paid on the 3rd, SSI on the 1st.
Which birthday counts for spousal or survivor benefits?
The payment date follows the birthday of the worker whose record the benefit is paid on, not the birthday of the person receiving it.
What if my date falls on a holiday?
If your regularly scheduled payment date falls on a Saturday, Sunday or legal public holiday, benefits will be paid the business day before your due date.
When is SSI paid?
SSI paid on the 1st of the month. When the first day of the month falls on the weekend or a Federal holiday, you receive your SSI payment on the last business day before the first day of the month.
My payment is late. When should I call?
If you don't receive your payment on the expected date, please allow three additional mailing days before contacting Social Security.
